ngentot sama kuda is one of the most famous Indonesian folk tales. The story tells how a man called Mukhlis, who has lost his horse, asks every person he meets to lend him their horse just for one night. Unfortunately for Mukhlis, he ends up getting nine different horses for nine consecutive nights. Because each of the nine horses had special powers, they lead to bizarre situations that result in hilariously funny outcomes. This article explores these stories and delves into some of the cultural implications around them. It also considers how deeply embedded this folk tale is in Indonesia’s traditional society and culture today. Even though the Javanese word for horse is "kuda", the word "kuda" is not used as it has become a pejorative term in Indonesia, referring to a derogatory way of calling someone stupid. Instead, the horse that Mukhlis chases during the story is referred as the horse that can run fast, thus becoming kuda gede (the big horse). The story begins with Mukhlis, an Indonesian man who had lost his horse and was looking for a replacement. He asked random people he met on his journey if he could borrow their horses for one night and would return it on the next day. However, his search was unsuccessful because none of them were able to loan their horses (except for one woman who readily agreed but then immediately regretted it). The following nights, Mukhlis continued his search with the same method. Every night he would go to someone new and ask for their horse, but every time it ended with the same result. On the eighth night (the day before he planned on getting his own mare), Mukhlis met a farmer who kindly offered him his mare on condition that he kept her in sight all day long. When he was able to catch his mare, he thanked the farmer and returned home with his horse. The following morning, when Mukhlis returned to the farmer’s house to give back his mare, he discovered that she had been stolen. Mukhlis then asked the people in town for their assistance and they collectively decided to take revenge on the thief. The plan worked and they were able to find out who stole Mukhlis’ mare: a ruffian who was in love with it and wanted to hide in her pen when Mukhlis was in town. Mukhlis chased him in the street but could not catch him because of the thieving ruffian's speediness. Mukhlis returned to the village and told the story to his friends. The whole town decided to chase after the ruffian. In the end, they achieved their mission and captured the thief. After a lengthy court hearing, Mukhlis was finally able to take his mare back from the thief. It is said that folklore always has a moral lesson behind it, and this tale is no different – it showcases how important it is for each individual to be honest. The tale also illustrates how easy it is for a person, especially a foreigner, to find himself in a precarious situation when he or she does not understand the local customs or laws of a land. cfa1e77820
