"Tarak Mehta ki Babita ki a photo" is a pun on Tarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chashma. It is an Indian soap opera that has been running since 2003 on Sab TV. The show deals with the emotional, social and economic upheavals of an average Indian family. It has been the most watched television show in India for six years running as of November 2016 with a total viewership of over 75million. The show also made its mark by being one of few television programs deemed fit for children to watch, as well as just plain people who want something light and funny to watch everyday. The show is inspired by the real life experiences of its creator, Asit Modi who along with his family became overnight celebrities in their native town, Mehsana in Gujarat after the show aired. It was the first show ever to become famous exclusively through word of mouth publicity (nokri chizi), as it never advertised itself anywhere. Even today no one knows who starred in the show or how many seasons it ran for. The show also used to exhibit audience participation during the telecast asking them to express their opinions on various issues like politics, religion and current affairs. The show became so popular that the real life characters in the show were later made stars, including its lead actors Mainak Sen, Sharvari Thakkar, Manoj Joshi and Darshan Jariwala. Many other characters in the show went on to become celebrities in their own right. The popularity of the show led to an increase in audience for Sab TV who then started showing news based shows like Aaj Ki Baat and Ekta Kaushik ki Baat. In 2006 the show was adapted as a film by first time director Prakash. The first production of Kalakar Films, it had a change of screenwriter from first to second, and was widely panned as a result. Despite both Asit Modi and Tarun Aggarwal claiming the production company didn't have proper communication lines with them, they were nominated as villains in Prakash's Best Supporting Actor category award for their portrayal in the film. In fact, Modi announced that he would not participate in the screening if his name was announced as one of the awards. It won two additional prizes at the three main categories: best supporting actor and best comedy actor for Darshan Jariwala. In 2013 the show was remade as a web series by Geeta Kapoor who wrote and produced it independently. It has been praised for being mostly faithful to the original. The show features a cast including Aashish Chaudhary, Renuka Puri, Uday Modak and others playing characters from the original show. The episode was released online on YouTube on 10 August 2013 and has since gained over 2 million views.
